This is an excellent genealogical resource for those seeking to learn about the Civil War service of a member of this unit. The 2nd South Carolina Infantry (also called the 2nd Palmetto Regiment) completed its organization new Richmond, Virginia, in May 1861. Its men came predominately from Columbia, Camden, and Charleston and the countries of Sumter, Richland, Greenville, Kershaw, and Lancaster. The 2nd South Carolina Infantry is a vivid and stirring account of this hard fighting regiment that fought in the Army of Northern Virginia in General Joseph Kershaw's Brigade. The unit served under Generals Toombs, Kershaw, Kennedy and Conner. The regiment fought in most of the Army of Northern Virginia's battles against the Army of the Potomac and in 1864 transferred to the western theater of the war with General James Longstreet's Corps fighting in Georgia and Eastern Tennessee. The book gives and excellent history of the regiment, but also gives many accounts of the personal lives of its soldiers and of day-by-day events and operations. The regiment first saw action at First Manassas (Bull Run). It fought in the eastern theater battles from the Seven Days’ Battles to Cold Harbor and was detached with General Longstreet at Chickamauga and Knoxville. During the second day of Battle at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, the unit fought in hard action across the Emmitsburg Road going toward the Stony Hill and being shelled and shot by the regiments and batteries including the famed Irish Brigade. The 2nd Regiment swarmed into the Wheatfield and did hard fighting that cost of lives of many. The 2nd Regiment fought at the Battle of Chickamauga, the East Tennessee Campaign, the Overland Campaign, Petersburg, Cedar Creek, and Richmond, before finally surrendering at Greensboro, North Carolina under General Joseph E. Johnston. In every battle, the regiment was in the thick of the action. The book also includes an outstanding muster roll and history of the soldiers of the 2nd South Carolina that enhances this book tremendously. An excellent study of this famed unit from Kershaw’s Brigade and its man.
