Block starts at the advertisement page. Undated, though a contemporary prev owner's name and date to the inner cover is dated 1879. Bound in the original brown hardcover boards, title in gilt to the spine and in back and reverse gilt to the upper board. Wear to the spine ends. Inner hinges cracked to webbing. Pages browned, but generally in good order. 350pp plus 14pp section of ads to the rear. 9 pages of illustration of carving for various stock animals and fish. Fair to Good- overall. Classic Victorian Cookbook. In her early sixties Maria Rundell (1745-1828) began to assemble a manuscript collection of recipes for the use of her daughters. the chance visit of a family friend, one John Murray, a publisher and a chancer, was to transform what had been essentially private and domestic exercise into one of the great publishing successes of the century. The New System of domestic cookery broke new ground in its sensible matter-of-fact tone. It was addressed to 'managers of families', or aspiring ones, and presumed little. It still reads well after all these years. first published in 1806 and instantly successful it ran into over seventy editions by the 1840s. Along with Hannah Glasse, she was honoured as the subject of an entry in the British Dictionary of National Biography; they were the only two women recognized solely for their success as cookbook authors.---------------------------------------------One of a number of similar items I am selling. Suitable for reading, but not necessarily a good gift copy. The old saying in bookselling is "good ain't good." Fair: Another term for Poor or Reading Copy: Heavily worn or damaged, a poor book will be readable but not attractive.
