Description: This is an old carved wooden rabbit mask with highly stylized form, painted spots, tall carved ears and a well weathered surface. According to local beliefs, the dyommo mask (rabbit) which performs with the dannana mask (hunter). The hunter would pretends to hunt the several rabbit masks performing with him. He chases them; they flee in all directions, hiding among the spectators assembled in the village square Dogon peoples, Mali, West Africa. This mask measures 17 x 6.5 inches, The mask can also include a display stand. Provenance: Ex: Allison Davis Collection. Allison Davis was an American educator, anthropologist, writer, researcher, and scholar who was considered one of the most promising black scholars of his generation. Davis is depicted on a US Postage Stamp issued on February 1, 1994.
