FORMAT Paperback CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description In this new addition to the very popular Straight Talking Introductions series, two experienced psychotherapists provide a simple, factual, objective explanation of what you get when you seek therapy. Based on the latest research, this book tells you what works (and doesnt work), how it works, what you should look for from therapy and your therapist, and what to do if it isnt helping. With more than 500 different types of talking therapy on offer, mostly provided in the private sector, it can be a bewildering experience trying to find what will best help you with your problems. But therapy does work, and this essential guide will help you get the most from what it offers. Author Biography Matt Wotton and Graham Johnston worked for two decades at the centre of government on some of the most complex problems facing the country, shaping decisions that affected millions of people. In the last decade, they left government, retrained as psychotherapists, and set up the London Centre for Applied Psychology, which provides evidence-based training to mental health professionals and consults to business on mental health and wellbeing at work. Matt is a former Chair of the Bowlby Centre. He has been a member of the Prison & Probation Board, studied at the London Business School and has an MBA from Warwick University. He contributes to the national press on relationship breakdown, managing mental health in sports and how therapy and psychological coaching impact high performance. Graham was Director of Policy at the Bowlby Centre. He has studied in the US and has an MBA from Imperial College, London. He writes and speaks on relationships and parenting in the 21st century, the challenges of midlife, and how therapy sits alongside developments in technology, A.I., psychedelics and psychiatric medication. Further reading and resources, References Review So much is written for therapists about how best to support clients with a range of problems, but so little for people who are the clients and are wondering how best to navigate the therapeutic process. Indeed, the language used by therapists, the different types of therapies and the expectations on how best to use the time available are sometimes unfathomable. This is a superb text that, in plain and accessible language, demystifies the whole endeavour – from start to finish. In writing this wonderful book, Wotton and Johnston have created an invaluable resource for anyone thinking of therapy, to best position them to walk through the door (or log in online) with more confidence and understanding of what might happen. This compelling and highly readable book might be seen as the first part of therapy itself, in equipping the client with insight, knowledge and autonomy as they take their first steps. – Andrew Reeves, Professor in Counselling Professions and Mental Health, University of Chester -- This is a well-researched and useful resource, especially for those who dont qualify or cant wait for NHS help and who need to access services from the voluntary sector or from private providers. Its the kind of book Id recommend professionally and personally. – Claire Vilarrubi, forensic psychologist. -- Given how life-changingly important therapy can be and how mind-bogglingly confusing the world of therapy is, its a wonder we dont have more books like this. Drawing on their deep commitment to therapys potential, Wotton and Johnston offer a text that is as accessible and jargon-free as it is comprehensive and solidly researched. From choosing best therapist for your needs, understanding all your options, staying safe, and getting the most out of what might be one of the most important decisions of your life, this book has it all. Wonderfully comprehensive and well written, this is a must-read for anyone considering therapy. – Dr Aaron Balick, PhD, psychotherapist and author -- Matt Wotton and Graham Johnston are therapists on a mission to explain the world of the mind and how therapy can help many of us live more satisfying lives. Avoiding jargon, this short book accurately explains what talking therapy is like and can achieve, as well as highlighting relevant research. The authors are encouraging and supportive, but also honest about the hard work that therapy may require. I sense that their inclusive, readable style will convert many readers to take the plunge and look for a therapist of their own. – Louise Chunn, founder of therapist-matching platform Welldoing -- Knowing where to start when you think you might need help from a therapist is a daunting prospect. You dont know what you dont know. This book is a must – a credible, straightforward and objective guide to the world of therapy. Its well researched, clearly written, easy to read and understand. – Jeremy Lowe, Investment Manager at a Top 20 Hedge Fund. -- As every GP knows, referring a patient for therapy often involves a long wait and very little choice in the treatment they get. And sometimes patients just cant wait. Those lucky enough to be able to find low cost therapy or pay for therapy themselves need this book to help them navigate the minefield of unregulated private practice. It tells you what to look for and, just as importantly, what to avoid. Its exactly the kind of book I would have recommended to my patients. – Dr Ivor Robinson, retired GP Details ISBN1915220335 Author Graham Johnston Publisher PCCS Books Series Straight Talking Introductions Year 2023 ISBN-13 9781915220332 Format Paperback Publication Date 2023-09-07 Imprint PCCS Books Subtitle What it is, why it works, how to get it Place of Publication Manchester Country of Publication United Kingdom Audience General UK Release Date 2023-09-07 DEWEY 616.8914 Pages 194 Alternative 9781915220349 ISBN-10 1915220335 We've got this At The Nile, if you're looking for it, we've got it.
