Description: A Synopsis of the Genera of American Plants, According to the Latest Improvements on the Linnean System: With the new Genera of Michaux and others. (Rich, O.) Georgetown, D.C. Carter, J.M. for J. Milligan and others 1814 Hardcover 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall viii + 167 + [3] pp including ad on [169]. Index. 3/4 leather with hard paper boards. Leather spine just a little rubbed, gilt bright and legible , leather corners a little rubbed, boards a bit rubbed as well with old small name sticker at bottom front. Interior has names of Heydrick family of Philadelphia, 1816 on end papers in a few different hands along with some doodling, more Heydrick family on 2nd fly. Title page and following leaf have light humidity stain, title page recto and verso have small pencil point black spot atop printer's name, page 54 has some small brown spots at the bottom which have oxidized surrounding pages, some general foxing and toning but otherwise clean and unmarked, publisher's ad at [169] is trimmed close at fore-edge and is cut shorter than the rest of the leaves and has quite a bit of foxing and some humidity staining, last two blanks have a bit of the same humidity staining at the gutter. Binding is solid. Quite scarce in commerce, this is a sound and attractive copy. Attributed to O. Rich, who is sometimes identified as Oliver O. Rich and otherwise as Obadiah Rich, the bibliographer whose brother was a botanist. An 1816 articles refers to "publisher O. Rich" while an 1849 article identifies "O. Rich" as the compiler. Library of Congress says that the O. Rich attribution is probably mistakenly applied from a flyleaf inscription. It seems unlikely that the bibliographer Obadiah Rich branched out into botany in the middle of his otherwise unplant-related career. The mystery of the author aside, this is a nice copy of a scarce title.
