My only aim was to make all these songs playable and enjoyable to the great mass of Sullivan's admirers who possess average pianistic technique. I made it my task to integrate the melody with the piano parts. All ensemble parts were condensed into one vocal line (with one exception). In order to bring the songs within range of the average voice, I had to transpose more than a third of them into a practical key."
