In Burkes Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790), he defended constitutional monarchy, the aristocracy, and the Church of England, In doing so he made an attack on Marys friend, the Rev Richard Price. She wrote this work in response, attacking the aristocracy and the despotic nature of British government, whilst advocating a democratic republic. It was the first shot in the Revolution Controversy pamphlet war in which Thomas Paines Rights of Man (1792) became the rallying cry for reformers and radicals alike.
