In 1784 Thomas Evans was captured and taken north to Ohio and Canada. In 1786 Shawnee Indians attacked the Moore home, killing several family members and taking 8 year-old Mary Moore prisoner. Also captured were several family members and Martha Evans, sister of Thomas. In 1787 Mary and Martha returned home after being ransomed by Thomas Evans. In this book Mary’s son by her husband Rev. Samuel Brown, records her life in captivity and the long, perilous journey of Martha’s brother Thomas to find his sister. Abb’s Valley takes its name after Absalom Looney, allegedly the first settler in the area. It is located in Tazewell County, Virginia 15 miles west of Bluefield, 15 miles northeast of the of Tazewell, and 20 miles northwest of Burkes Garden. Before the arrival of the Scotch-Irish pioneers the area was a hunting ground for Cherokee and Shawnee Indians for thousands of years. In the spring of 1771 Thomas and John Witten moved from Maryland to establish the first permanent settlement in Tazewell County at Crab Orchard. Prior to that time abundant game attracted hunters and trappers from other areas of Augusta County (later Botetourte County). Because the Indians resented the arrival of the settlers, there were wars for more than two decades. These decades are described in History of the Settlement and Indian Wars of Tazewell County, Virginia, which is also available in my EBay store.
