Description: Intrigue! The Battle of Ushant, fought on 27th July 1778 against the French under d’Orvilliers, proved indecisive. Admiral Keppel’s flagship was the newly-commissioned H.M.S. Victory. Keppel underwent a court martial after the battle as a result of allegations of misconduct by his second-in-command Sir Hugh Palliser, but was honourably acquitted in February 1779 when the charges were dismissed as ‘malicious and ill-founded’. Silver, 523.1 grains - 1.2 oz. This medallion is on a very thick planchet. The high relief portrait is boldly detailed, and the brilliant, untoned fields show a bit of reflectivity. Some hairlines are seen, some planchet roughness atop the obverse suggests this is a cast rather than a rolled planchet. The edge shows a collar mark at 6 o'clock and what appears to be crushed diagonal reeding, best seen between 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock. This is likely production-era filing on the edge of a cast planchet which was then mostly obliterated in the two-part collar. An attractive example of a medal that is rarely encountered in silver (or any other composition). The AU grading of this coin is slightly confusing since it was clearly never minted to circulate. Ideal, almost exclusively in graded slabs with known provenance. This coin will ship insured for full value.
