Semmes was a commander in the US Navy, but resigned in 1861 to join the Confederacy. While in command of the C.S.S. Alabama, he captured 68 Union merchant ships, and was known and feared throughout the North for his exploits. The exploits of Raphael Semmes once startled the world. During the War between the Stats his name was a household word from Sandy Hook to the Indian Ocean. Single-handed he very nearly swept the northern shipping off the seas. He captured some eighteen merchant vessels in the Sumter, some sixty-eight in the Alabama. The terror of his name, more than anything else, led nearly six hundred northern ships to transfer to British registry. Nothing approaching his devastating cruise in the Alabama, from the Azores to the Grand Banks, to the Caribbean, to the Cape of Good Hope, to the east Indies and back to Cherbourg for the last great duel with the Kearsarge, is to be found in the naval annals. An extraordinary man, an extraordinary career, a fascinating book. THIS BOOK SET IS IN FINE CONDITION This first edition, antique book is in excellent condition.
