Description: ADOLF DEHN OIL PAINTING SPANISH SUNSETFRAMED IMAGE: 6 1/2 in H X 15 in W Adolf Dehn (1895–1968) was an American artist primarily known for his work as a lithographer. Early Life and Education: Dehn was born on November 22, 1895, in Waterville, Minnesota. His artistic journey began at the tender age of six, and by the time of his death, he had created nearly 650 images. After graduating as valedictorian from Waterville High School in 1914, he attended the Minneapolis School of Art (now known as the Minneapolis College of Art and Design). It was during this time that he met and became close friends with Wanda Gág, who would be his first love. In 1917, both Dehn and Gág were among the few students nationwide to earn scholarships to the Art Students League of New York. During World War I, Dehn declared himself a conscientious objector and spent time in a guardhouse detention camp before working as a painting teacher at an arm rehabilitation hospital. He returned to the Art Students League, where he created his first lithograph, titled “The Harvest”. Career and Influences: In 1921, Dehn’s lithographs were featured in his first exhibition at the Weyhe Gallery in New York City. He was connected to New York’s politically left-leaning activists during this period. Dehn’s artistic adventures took him to Europe, where he found living in Paris and Vienna to be “simply glorious.” He supported himself by providing light-hearted cartoons and scenic European landscapes to editors back in the U.S. His caricatures captured the spirit of the Roaring Twenties, burlesque, opera houses, and the café scene, appearing in magazines such as Vanity Fair. Dehn’s lithographs numbered over 600 before 1936, after which he increasingly turned to watercolor. He also taught at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and authored three books, including one on watercolor painting. Artistic Movements and Legacy: Dehn participated in and helped define several important movements in American art: Regionalism: A movement that celebrated rural and small-town America. Social Realism: Art that depicted social issues and everyday life. Caricature: His droll depictions of human foibles showcased his technical skills and wit. Dehn received two Guggenheim Fellowships and was recognized by institutions such as the National Academy of Design and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His legacy lives on through his captivating lithographs and watercolors, which continue to inspire art enthusiasts and collectors. Adolf Dehn’s captivating artworks can be enjoyed in various exhibitions and museums. Here are some places where you can explore his work: Smithsonian American Art Museum: The Smithsonian American Art Museum features Dehn’s lithographs and paintings. His satirical prints of European and New York scenes were the product of an unconventional Minnesota upbringing and an iconoclastic eye. Notable pieces include “Rainstorm in Minnesota”, “Hay Meadows”, and “Northern Minnesota Lake”, which showcase his skill in painting. These works are similar in line and shape to the rest of his art but are more saturated with color and lack the satirical edge of his prints. The Art Institute of Chicago: The Art Institute of Chicago holds several of Dehn’s works. Notable pieces include: “Untitled” (1961) “Anita Steckel Head with Beard” (1949) “Ellsworth Kelly Blue Replica #4” (1965) “Jo Baer Project for a Sculpture” (1956) Digital Collections from St. Kate’s: This collection showcases Dehn’s range of subjects and styles, including portraits, landscapes, satire, and storytelling. Other Museums: Dehn’s works are held in over 100 museums, including the National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art. Over 25 museums hold extensive collections of his output.
