Description: I can say this without any sense of hyperbole, I think this is possibly the most elegant piece I’ve ever seen. Photos don’t do it total justice, although it looks good in the photos. It’s not the most valuable or made of the rarest material but in terms of pure form, it’s near perfection. It stands roughly 13.5”x15”. I believe it would be intended as a centerpiece bowl. You could call it a compote but it’s a pretty big one. Made by the Meriden Britannia Company of Meriden, CT. They made some of the most lovely figural objects in Silverplate of the entire Victorian era in my opinion. Many exceeding the quality of even Gorham and Reed & Barton I’d say. This piece features a calla lily on either side and maybe a single lily of the valley near the handle. The figural leaves and flowers are amazingly real looking. It has a couple small issues. The leaves on either side of the dish have broken away from the tiny weld that holds the to the main dish. One happened long ago and was repaired nicely. The other just have happened later on and wasn’t repaired. Any jeweler who offers repair should be able to very easily take a small drop of silver and fix this quickly. As it sits it’s not glaring at all and one could easily enjoy the object exactly as it is for many years without ever doing anything to it. The inside of bowl has decorative floral scroll engraving around it. This has partially faded from years of use and/or polishing. It looks totally appropriate to the age of the item and I don’t think will impede anyone’s enjoyment of it. The very definition of “age appropriate wear”. Otherwise this price looks as good as it did when it was made 1860’s-1880’s or so. It came out of a high end New England auction house. I put kind of a “I hope no one buys it” price on it but it’s a fair price for the amount of beauty you’re getting I think. If you search other quality Meriden listings you’ll find it’s in line with objects of similar quality. I don’t think any are quite as elegant though. Thanks for looking. Ships ASAP! Thanks
