Description: AETNA of HARTFORD Aetna Fire Insurance of Hartford, Connecticut was started in 1819 with $15,000 in cash and $150,000 in total capital. The company flourished and started their Aetna Life operation in 1853. The property operation weathered devastating fires, including the Chicago blaze in 1871, for which the company paid out almost $3.8 million. The company offered its first Aetna health insurance policy in 1899 and was among the first health insurers in the United States. Aetna Fire was acquired by Travelers in 1996. This is an authentic Aetna fire mark which is listed in the "Footprint of Assurance" (the Authoritative Source for Fire Marks) as BU 100. This Aetna issued mark is from the mid 1800's. The mark is of tinned iron construction and measures approximately 6.1/2" X 2 3/8”. It has black with gold lettering and trim. This is a antique fire mark in very good condition for its age, with some paint loss and scrapes reflective of years of exposure to the elements.
