The company flourished and started their Aetna Life operation in 1853. The property operation weathered devastating fires, including the Chicago blaze in 1871, for which the company paid out almost $3.8 million. The company offered its first Aetna health insurance policy in 1899 and was among the first health insurers in the United States. Aetna Fire was acquired by Travelers in 1996.
