Description: Albrecht Dürer (Durer) Samson rending the Lion woodcut circa 1496-97 On laid paper, with countermark visible. A very fine impression, printing darkly and evenly, in an intermediate state between Meder c and d. Trimmed right outside the borderline. A few small tears (1/4 inch) along edges; tape on reverse. Otherwise an exceptional example of this important early woodcut. As opposed to later woodcuts by Dürer, which were carved by other accomplished hands, scholars are in general agreement that the artist himself carved this block. the sense of dimensionality and motion conveyed in the central passage of Samson have made this work one of the artist's recognized masterpieces. Block & Sheet 15 x 11 inches. Serious offers welcome.
