To these are added four duets with no liturgical connection at all, and the whole is framed by a great Prelude and Fugue in E-flat, known as the St. Anne. All of this is performed by organist Hansjörg Albrecht, who is also the new (since 2005) conductor of the Munich Bach Choir, which was founded by Karl Richter in 1954. The choir is involved here in singing the chorales from the catechism. The choral interludes make a fine addition, but they are not part of Bach's conception. For the Organ Mass Albrecht plays the three-manual Hopfgarten Organ in Brixental, Austria, built by Metzler in 1998. It uses mechanical action and is tuned in "slightly unequal temperament". The instrument is quite large, with a wide range of color. Albrecht tends to register the pieces loudly and to good effect. It is nice to hear the big works-- the prelude, fugue, `Wir Glauben', etc.--played with such strength. These are among the most powerful pieces ever written for organ, and we should sense and hear their importance. But I would prefer less 16' on the manuals; this thickens the texture too much and robs the music of transparency. Albrecht also is a very imaginative player; he makes liberal use of agogic accents and detached articulations. (You may get a better idea of him when I tell you he has recorded-- on organ--excerpts from Wagner's Ring, Moussorgsky's Pictures, and dances from Petrouchka.) In Bach I would be happier with something more austere, but Albrecht's playing is undoubtedly exciting and holds your attention. The recording is very good, but too reverberant, thus contributing to the opacity. The choral contribution is clear and articulate, with emphasis more on precision than on legato singing. I do have some reservations, then, but this is glorious music and in the end an enjoyable recording. -- American Record Guide, Paul L.
