The images in his works are frequently based on folk stories he heard as a child; recurring figures include La Llorona (the Weeping Woman) and Chamuco (the Devil). Colunga, who also spent time working in the circus, paints circus and carnival imagery, magicians, clowns, and vendors. His paintings frequently feature fantastical stories with bizarre elements and bold colors. Though Colunga mostly paints in a figurative style, he habitually exaggerates the human form for narrative effect.
