He, along with Chief Joseph directed the 1877 retreat from eastern Oregon to Montana and onward toward the Canadian border during the war. He led the Alpowai band of the Nez Perce, which included the communities of Asotin, Alpowa, and Sapachesap along the Clear Water River in Idaho. He was killed by a Cheyenne scout in 1877 before reaching the Canadian border. He was a very well respected leader.
