Description: AMERICA (1917) TO 1941 She was built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, Ireland for the Hamburg America Line as a 22,225 GT ship with dimensions of 668'x74'. Twin-screw, 18 knots, quadruple expansion engines four masts and two funnels. Passenger accommodations for 386 first, 150 second and 1,970 third class. Converted to an American troopship in 1917 and renamed AMERICA. Commissioned as the troopship EDMUND B. ALEXANDER in 1941. Reconditioned in 1942 and a large single funnel replaced the original two. Scrapped at Baltimore in 1987.
