Description: I have for sale an 1863 bronze medal awarded by the American Institute. The American Institute of New York City was a civic organization that existed from 1838 to 1980's and awarded medals of recognition to inventors, scientists and agriculturalists in gold, silver and bronze. This medal is two inches in diameter and Robert Lovett was the medalists. The medal obverse at the top rim reads AMERICAN INSTITUTE and at the bottom rim NEW YORK and in tiny letters R. LOVETT. In the center it shows Columbia seated with a spinning wheel, cornucopia, fasces of wheat and an eagle around her and she is holding a staff with a liberty cap in one hand, holding out a wreath to a ship on the horizon in the other hand. On the reverse it has a wreath and at the open end of the wreath it reads AWARDED TO and engraved in the field, it reads, J.G. LEFFINGWELL & CO. - FOR THE BEST - GAS GOVERNOR - 1863.
