Description: This is an early 18th century tapestry depicting a Roman figure on a chariot. This piece shows a similar subject to the tapestries hanging in Chaumont sur Loire in France named "la Tenture des Planetes et des Jours" that was woven around 1570 in the Brussels workshops and acquired in 1889 by Prince Henri-Amédée de Broglie, in order to decorate the walls of the Council Chamber. The main theme of the series is astrology. The iconography is organized according to a pattern common to all the pieces. Each divinity of Roman antiquity, corresponding to a day of the week and a planet, is seated on a chariot symbolizing the movement of the stars. The size is 50 x 23 inches. There is wear and repairs. Please contact me with any questions and take a look at my other listings for more tapestries.
