Description: An Historical Sketch of the First Church in Boston, From Its Formation to the Present Period . . .By the Late William Emerson, Boston: Munroe and Francis, 1812. [FIRST EDITION.] [5],10-256 pp. (matches the pagination of the copy held by the American Antiquarian Society.) Includes a table of contents referred to as an "index". Condition: Fine, durably bound in modern blue buckram. Two modern free endpapers before title page and at rear. Original text shows light stains, spotting but is still very clean overall and quite supple. Edges, nice and smooth, were probably re-trimmed. See pictures. William Emerson was the father of Ralph Waldo Emerson and the twelfth pastor of the First Church in Boston. He was unable to complete this work before he died and so it doesn't cover all the history "to the present period" as the title promises. See the Advertisement of the Editors in the photos for details. This volume also includes two sermons by William Emerson, delivered in 1808--the first upon leaving the building the congregation had occupied since 1712 and the second when the first service was performed in their new edifice. The First Church in Boston was established by Governor John Winthrop in 1630 as a protestant (defiant of the Church of England) and congregationalist church. By the mid 19th Century it became the center of the Transcendentalist Movement and eventually became a Unitarian and then a Unitarian Universalist church in the 20th Century. A nice Early American Imprint and an excellent record of the pastors of the church and the highlights of their tenures as deemed important by Emerson. A great addition to any library devoted to American history, church history, Boston history, early imprints, or the Concord writers and their families, which included the Emersons, the Alcotts, and Thoreau.
