Ancient Greece Architecture Sculpture original antique chromolithograph 1889

Description: DESCRIPTION: Antique / Vintage chromolithograph of Griechisch - Architktur, Skulptur und Ornamentik (Greece - Architecture, Sculpture and Ornamentation) ARCHITECTURE. SCULPTURE. ORNAMENTATION. Greek ornamentation has always retained an exemplary artistic value, mainly because Greek artists knew how to adapt the decoration to their works of art in such a way that it never overgrew the structural core of the work, but rather accompanied it with beautiful lines and forms. As a result, the basic form remains clearly visible and is only further emphasized by the ornament. This will be confirmed when looking at the magnificent architectural works as well as the simplest objects for domestic use created by the Greeks; they surprise the viewer with their high degree of perfection in form and great beauty. Fig. 1-3 show representatives of the three forms of development of Greek architecture: the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian styles. In the Doric capital, the purpose of support is expressed in calm simplicity and its forms are reminiscent of the strict spirit of the Doric tribe. Fig. 2 shows the lightness and perfect grace that corresponds to the character of the Ionian people. The lavish forms of the Corinthian capital, however, show the love of splendor that spread from the rich trading city of Corinth throughout Greece. Fig. 4 shows one of those magnificent virgin figures that were used instead of columns in the Caryatid Hall of the Erechtheion. Fig. 1. Doric capital from Paestum (with painted ornaments). Fig. 2. Ionian capital from the Temple of Erechtheus on the Acropolis in Athens. Fig. 3. Corinthian capital from the choragic monument of Lysicrates in Athens. Fig. 4. Caryatid from the Erechtheion. Fig. 5 น. 6. Acroteria from steles (funeral columns), Paris. Fig. 7 - 9. Anthem decorations. Fig. 10 and 11. Frieze fragments with winged panther and griffin.Fig. 12 and 13. Figures 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9 taken from: "Andrea de Vico, 30 tavole di ornamenti architettonici greci romani e italiani. The rest based on original casts from the plaster model collection of the Royal Central Office for Trade and Commerce in Stuttgart, and on photographs. ARCHITEKTUR. SKULPTUR. ORNAMENTIK. Fig. 1.
