Description: Up for offer is a wonderful Roman military brick of very fine red clay from the Roman occupation of Carnuntum (modern Vienna, Austria). The Roman brick fragment is stamped XIIII GMV (identified with the 14th Legion) within a rectangular serrated frame. While there are dozens of examples of the type in the Archaeological Museum at Vienna, this example is unusual, perhaps unique, in that the letters GMV are stamped upside down! From Carnuntum. The usual inscription in black ink from Dr. Zapfe on the side of the brick reads: "Carnuntum, 50 Leg.Lager" Circa 2nd-4th Century AD Length at max point is 5", thickness is .75" Great Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Dr. Helmut Zapfe, Austria, who was an noted expert.
