Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The title of this book is: The Diary of a Dead Man, compiled by J. P. Ray. It is advertised as: The unedited diary and letters of Ira Pettit, a Union Private, who fought on the battlefields of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness, and who died in the squalor of Andersonville Prison in Georgia. I bought this maybe 50 years ago and have read it a number of times. I read a lot of Civil War material, but this was something else. At times I felt like I was right there with this man. It even inspired me and my wife to stop off at Andersonville, Georgia to tour the area years ago. I enjoyed it even more than the many battlefields we had seen….. we even saw his grave! Later we stayed at an historic hotel in Americus, perhaps ten miles away from this site. It was a glorious visit and we meant to go back, but have not – age has caught up to us. I did read the book a second time a few years ago and found it still excellent. As an aside, there was a National Prisoner of War museum very close and it was so interesting. Back to the book….. if you want to enjoy some great Civil War reading, I highly recommend this first-person narrative. The book is clean, tight and kind of like-new, with only a few scrapes on the cover, and a bit of original label adhesive on the back. Look at the pictures – I showed these things. Paperback, 5-1/4” x 8-1/4” and contains 439 pages plus 16 pages of photos at the end of the book. Sorry about the postage..... it is ridiculous how high even Media Mail is nowdays.
