Description: This antique British satirical print titled "A Catalanian attack on a Chance-Seller" was produced in 1807 by Charles Williams, and published by Thomas Tegg. The engraving depicts a scene from early 19th century British political satire. Lord Eldon in his Chancellor's robe, surrounded by seven of his fellow barristers in wig and gown, looking at him with various expressions of horror to satisfaction, is being attacked by a cat dressed to represent Angelica Catalani, the very popular soprano of the time. She, saying to him, she will make him suffer for not willing to pay the five shillings to hear her sing. His rely to the barristers, "Will none of you relieve me from this Termagant?" It was reportedly stated, Lord Eldon would not give five shillings to hear her sing. For seven years she would be the unrivaled prima donna in London. The print is hand-colored and beautifully framed with non glare glass, measures 20 1/2 inches in length, 17 inches in height, and 1 inch in width. The print itself measures to the edge of matting, 14 in by 10 1/4 in.. The print was produced in England and is a representation of British political satire culture. It features a satirical illustration style, with a theme of theater, people, social history, and politics.
