Antique 1856 Japanese Woodblock Ukiyoe Art by Utagawa Yoshitora

Description: This is an Antique Utagawa Yoshitora Japanese woodblock print depicting the Battle of Kurikara fought in 1187 AD. This Woodblock was printed in 1856. This woodblock was authenticated in 1994 by M. Ishii & Sons in Yokohama, Japan as an original work of art by Yoshitora, which was printed in 1856. The COA states, "Original old wood block print - Battle scene of Kurikawa pass at Kaga Province in 1187 between Kiso Yoshinaka troops and Heike clan warriors. Heike clan troops were defeated by the surprise attack in the night. By Yoshitora, printed in 1856." Note*** the print is in very good condition but there are fold marks near the top of the print from age. See last picture. UTAGAWA YOSHITORA was a student of Kuniyoshi who only worked between 1840 and the early 1870s Most of his scenes show historical incidents and legends. Like all Woodblock Artists from the 19th Century, he created his own versions of some of the older series, but his work is uniquely individual in style and displays his artistic amazing insight and creativity. The Print measures about 14" tall by 9 1/2 wide". The frame measures 18 1/2" tall by 13 3/4" wide. Most of the items I sell are estate finds, and are presented to you in, as is, as found condition.
