Description: This is what I will call a unique antique iron and brass file cabinet label holder. It is marked with the patent date of May 1858. The overall piece measures 5 3/8 inches x 2 5/8 inches (13.6 cm x 6.6 cm). It is approximately 1/4 inch thick (.6 cm). I did some preliminary research but was unable to find anything at all like this. Most of it is made of black painted iron, of which the paint is definitely original. The piece in the center is brass. This brass piece has a tab on either end, and it seems you press it down in order to slide your label in through the opening just next to the tab. It’s an unusual little system. Still, it has an incredible look about it. Some of the paint has worn off. The brass is deeply tarnished with some type of spotting on it. It doesn’t affect it at all and actually adds to the feeling of age. It weighs 4 ounces (116 g).
