Description: Original photo of Mr. Karpe, taken in Los Angeles by Frank G. Schumacher around 1890. I believe this was very likely Gustav Karpe, born 1835 in Germany, came to the US at the age of 20, fought in the Civil War... lived mostly in Wisconsin before retiring to Los Angeles right around the time this photo was taken... he was the US Postmaster of Plymouth Wisconsin from 1869-1886. Karpe was also a farmer, landowner and real estate agent. He died of heart failure in Los Angeles in 1893. Mount is about 8 1/4" x 4". Very good antique condition.
