Description: Free eBay listing template designed by dewiso.com Antique 18th Century Solid Bronze Alchemy & Apothecary Mortar - Ribbed This is a listing for an antique 18th century solid bronze alchemy & apothecary mortar. This piece is in excellent condition, having come from a private, vaulted collection in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Believed to be of German manufacture, the metalwork seen on this piece is indicative of early 18th century bronze tooling techniques. To clarify, this mortar is believed to be in the region of ~300 years old. The family curator has records indicating that this piece had been in the Tulsa family's collection for at least 100 years, pre-dating the collection's formal record keeping.Weighing in at roughly 10.6 pounds (yes, 10.6 pounds of solid bronze), the mortar is in excellent condition. There are no structural issues, and the fins/ribs are entirely intact. This piece has not been cleaned or polished, with remnants of old wax droplets still evident on both the inside and outside. These bronze mortars were, historically, a step up from their stone predecessors, seeing use in early alchemical, apothecary, and chemistry work. It could be argued that modern medicine was birthed in and by these heavy, clumsy bronze vessels during the Age of Enlightenment.Due to the age and rarity of these piece, exceptional precautions will be taken in order to ensure its safe transit.
