Excellent condition on this 110 year-old match stand ashtray. No chips or cracks; clean crazing can be seen. Great rare find for your collection.Following is some historical information I found online:In the late 1800's and at least until 1910 George Gammel operated a restaurant and off-license business at 17-19 Liberty Street, Utica, NY. The restaurant had been started by George's German-born father Robert, a son of '48 the fighters for liberty who fled Central European states seeking freer lands.George Gammel bottled beer in no. 17, and ran the restaurant at no. 19 Liberty St. "The restaurant was handsomely decorated in the Italian Renaissance style by Mr. Paul Boehm of Nuernberg, Bavaria, an artist of rare ability, though only 22 years of age. The work is certainly a great credit to so young an artist." (Source: NYS Historic Newspapers) -->
