Description: Up for your consideration rare original 19C French Emaux de Longwy large faience handled tray and vase. At some point between 1865 and 1870, Longwy potters embraced the influence of Asian design that was sweeping across France. They began to imitate Chinese cloisonné metalwork (cloisonné means “compartmentalised” in French), but the potters used opaque glass glazes on earthenware instead of metal. The pattern featured on this plate and vase can be traced directly to Owen Jones's "Examples of Chinese Ornament" (1867, plate 24). Very good condition consistent with age and use.
