They originally held holy oil which was used to anoint in baptism, and last rights given by the priests. The letters here are in Latin as follows:OS=Oleum Sanctum (Holy Oil) OI =Oleum Infirmum (oil for anointing) & SC=Sancta Chrism (used for baptizing!! The oils were "stacked" for easy manipulation by the priest!! HOWEVER, this will make an amazing 3 tiered modern day pill box. Condition: Good pre-owned condition, scratches throughout entire piece, no dings, cracks or splits, closes very tightly
