Description: In very good working condition This original Cast Iron Grapple Hook is dated 1870 and made by A. J. Nellis & Co., Pittsburgh, PA. The U.S. Patent Office issued the patent for this grapple to Seymour Rogers of Pittsburgh on March 1, 1870. See Patent No. 100330. The two spikes in the jaws grab onto the sides of an overhead beam, and they dig into the beam as weight is hung on the downward-pointing single hook. The grapple can be easily moved from one location to another. Making it an ideal lifting tool for a barn or in the outdoors. The patent application cites hoisting hay bales as one of many uses for this portable hook. One can see how they not only made this lifting grapple hook to be handy but they prized good looks as well. This piece has style. A perfect piece of 151 year old farm decor that can still be used today. It measures 17 inches long with the jaws closed.
