Description: An early 19th Century AMERICAN "STANDISH" (or desk Ink stand) in ornate styling of the late Georgian period (c. 1825 - 1840). This is an extremely rare piece, complete with all its original components. Unmarked (probably a New York maker) it is made of polished pewter, which would have been typical of the nouveau riche who could not afford sterling silver, but wanted to keep up appearances by emulating its color, feel and weight. Ultimately, the desk standish would be made obsolete with the invention of the fountain pen, and they would become treasured family heirlooms, decorative accessories, and fond mementos of an earlier time. The two glass inkpot cannisters are exceptional examples of period glassmaking, with fitted hinged lids; and the center wax or stamp box is adorned in matching style. The tray is highly detailed with a pedestal that elevates the piece and shows it off elegantly. Dimensions: 9" x 6" x 4." It is in excellent antique condition, with no dings or dents; it may be polished to a bright silver if you prefer, or maintained in its present deep patina. Be well.
