Antique BANDON OREGON souvenir cup NICE - ORNATE

Description: A 2 3/8 inch tall beautiful RED RUBY flashed cup with a sun-color AMETHYST tint in the base of it from BANDON OREGON. Note that the BODY is flashed a RUBY RED color but the bottom portion has a slight sun colored amethyst color. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown-glass cup that is well over 100 years old. Cup reads: "Souvenir / Bandon, Ore." Condition: It is in super CLEAN CLEAN condition. The etching is a little worn in places and it has just some traces of age wear. Otherwise fine, NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. Please see pictures for best idea of overall appearance / condition. Age: An ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown glass cup, ca. late 1800s - early 1900s. Back in the day these souvenirs were often won at small-town fairs, sold at tourist's stands or small businesses. There are not a lot of antique souvenir or advertising pieces from old BANDON OREGON, as it was a super small town back when this cup was made, around 1900. This is a super nice and quite ornate little cup, in excellent condition for how old it is, well over a century old and with just a trace of sun color AMETHYST tint in the base. You hear about old glass turning amethyst in the sunlight ... the amethyst tint is the result of it being blown with glass that had manganese added to it. Manganese is a mineral that was pulverized and added to glass to make the glass crystal clear. Only clear glass from before 1915 had manganese in it. Then, when exposed to sunlight the manganese starts to oxidize and turns a nice amethyst or lavender color, the result of a chemical reaction. The longer it is in the sun light, the darker purple it turns. A glass item has to be old enough to begin with, as with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1915 had manganese in it. With the start of WWI, manganese was no longer available as foreign imports decreased and domestic resources turned towards the war effort. NO MORE purple glass after 1915!
