Description: This is a rare antique handmade Benin tribal peoples lost wax cast hollow brass side blown metal trumpet which was collected from West Africa. This side blown trumpet was meant to be played similar to a flute but does not have finger holes and it has a recessed rectangular mouthpiece near the smaller tip of the instrument. This specimen still has some plant resin visible through the larger end hole which was for changing the sound and tone of the trumpet. This is in authentic original antique condition showing much wear from age and being tribally used and has surface patina. This specimen is for collecting and it is doubtful it is still able to be played as a musical instrument. More commonly made by the Benin were larger trumpet instruments similar to this smaller specimen called “akohen,” which were typically and historically only made to be played for the Oba, or reigning king of the Benin empire, this was to symbolize his wealth, power and status. Smaller trumpet instruments like this one made from brass like this specimen were to be used by other tribal members within the Benin society as a sign of reverence towards the Oba. There are many akohen trumpets depicted in Benin sculptures and also many akohen in museums which are able to be viewed online but they are very rare now on the market. This brass trumpet measures 10 inches long by 1.38 inches wide at the widest end and weighs 1 pound 2 ounces.
