Thank you for your interest! About the Engraver:William Home Lizars (1788-1859) was a Scottish painter and engraver. He studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh. His sister married Sir William Jardine. His father was a publisher and an engraver who had been a pupil of Andrew Bell, and engraved portraits as book illustrations. Upon his father's death he had to carry on the business of engraving and copperplate printing in order to support his mother and family. Lizars encountered John J. Audubon in Edinburgh in 1826, , introduced (on Audubon's account) with his portfolio by the naturalists Patrick Neill and Prideaux John Shelby. So began an intense period when Lizars helped Audubon meet Edinburgh luminaries likely to be useful to him: Robert Jameson, David Brewster and James Wilson in particular. Lizars had a celebrated portrait of Audubon painted (it is now in the White House), by John Syme. W.H. Lizars engraved over 1,200 different species of birds, animals, fish and insects. These are finely detailed and hand colored at the time of the publication with backgrounds left uncolored. About the Publisher:Sir William Jardine noted Scottish Ornitholigist was born February 23, 1800 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Sir Alexander Jardine, 6th baronet of Applegarth and wife Jane Maule. He was educated in New York and Edinburgh and studied medicine at Edinburgh University. At the early age of 25 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was co-founder of the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club. While ornithology was his main passion, he also studied ichthyology, botany and geology. He was the first to coin the term Iconology, and his was the first book written on the subject. His private natural history museum and library are said to have been the finest. Jarden wanted to make history accessible to the general public by editing the highly popular forty volumes of The Naturalist's Library published by his brother-in-law, the Edinburgh printer and engraver William Home Lizars. The series was divided into four main sections: Ornithology (14 volumes), Mammalia (13 volumes), Entomology (7 volumes) and Ichthyology (6 volumes): each prepared by a leading naturalist. The work was published in Edinburgh by W. H. Lizars. The intention of the series was to create a fine yet affordable work, describing and illustrating all elements of the natural world save botany. In addition, several plates were engraved after noted artists: John James Audubon, John Gould and Maria Sibylla Merian.
