Description: We are pleased to be selling thousands of early engravings, lithographs, and prints from the incredible collection amassed by Winfield Robbins (1840-1910) of Arlington, Massachusetts. After his death in 1910, the collection was donated to local institutions where it has sat for the last 100+ years. The collection covers many styles of works over numerous centuries so be sure to check back regularly for new listings. This listing is for a rare 1st state proof engraving of Mercury killing Argos done by Gerard de Lairesse in circa 1670. The date of 1670 was obtained from the British Museum who has this print in a later state as part of their collection. This edition was done before lettering was added to the bottom . The impression measures about 6” x 4.5”. There is a little discoloring along the top edge, some faded pencil notations along bottom margin, and a Robbins collection stamp on the reverse . Provenance: The Winfield Robbins Collection
