Description: Antique Matted Print Colored Miniature From Engraving The Britannia Bridge United Kingdom For Your Old Print Collection Or As Decorative Piece Around You Home Details Description: A colored print of a miniature scene of the rail road bridge known as the "BRITANNIA BRIDGE". The print shows the wide span bridge with the famous three towers crossing over water where many sail boats are floating. There is a train coming off one end of the bridge. There is another bridge in the background "Menai Bridge" which was opened in 1826. You can also see mountains in the distance and 3 groups of people in the foreground of the print. The people are dressed in colorful garb. The print is made from an old engraving and is mounted on an off-white card stock embossed with a decorative frame around the print and with the word "THE BRITANNIA BRIDGE" within and embossed decorative frame with the No. 28 surrounding it, suggesting that this number 28 of a series of similar kinds of prints. Additional information: The increasing popularity of rail travel in the 1830s necessitated a bridge to provide a direct rail link between London and the port of Holyhead by the Chester and Holyhead Railway. The bridge was finally opened in 1850. The bridge was decorated by four large lions sculpted in limestone by John Thomas, two at either end. The back of the print has hand written notation indicating that colossal lions sculpted by John Thomas can be found on either end of the bridge. See last photo. Date: Mid to late 1800s Origin: Continental. Size: The print is 3 11/16 " by 2 1/4", while the entire piece measures 7 1/4" by 5 3/8".
