Description: Antique Copeland Spode England WM Plummer & Co. NY Serving Platter Black Floral This is an antique ceramic service platter made in the early 1900's by Spode in England exclusively for the New York City retailer Wm H. Plummer & Co. It's a very pretty black-rimmed design with black festoons around colorful floral medallions with a center medallion featuring a colorful floral urn. The back has all kinds of markings: It's is marked Copeland Late SPODE England Rd No.657047. I don't know what the numbers mean. There is also a stamp Wm H. Plummer & Co. New York underneath. There are some what appear to be painted glaze numerical markings in yellow that look like 2 7054 16 to me but I can't make out the numbers well, so I could be wrong. The is an impression in the clay near the Spode stamp that looks like the number 12.There is an oval impression on the back that it is hard for me to read but it says Spode in the center of the oval. Unfortunately I could not figure out what the other writings are. The platter is in good condition for it's age. There are some stand marks in the glaze on the back from firing, a common technique at the time. There is a small chip on the rim, but it's underneath and not readily visible. There are some other dark marks that didn't wash off. Unlike surface dirt, they are smooth, like they are under the glaze so it may be something that happened while being produced in the factory. I don't think QC was the same back then and I do often find factory imperfections in antique and vintage ceramics and pottery. There are some very light scratches from use if held a certain way in the light but no cracks or crazing to the finish. Please view the photos as they are part of the description.
