Description: RareAntique, circa 1900-1930Cristiano character hailing from the dance: The Danza de los Historiantes (Dance of the Historical Persons), also known as the Danza de los Moros y Cristianos (Dance of the Moors and Christians)As you may know, Spain had been ruled by Muslim conquerors for many centuries and the last Moorish armies were driven from Spain in 1491. It was claimed that the Spanish armies were led to victory by Santiago, the reincarnation of Saint James the apostle. The Spanish celebrated the defeat of the Moors by creating a dance drama—Los Moros y Cristianos, which they taught to the Indians of the Americas to emphasize the power of the Christian God. This performance was quickly adopted in Guatemala. According to Barbara Bode, in The Dance of the Conquest in Guatemala (1961), the Moros y Cristianos “became the inspiration for plays that adapted the theme of conquest to the New World and to local heroes” (page 211).On the basis of this history, that the Moros y Cristianos came first and the other dances later, 20th century North American mask collectors have assumed that the older masks could only be from the Moros y Cristianos dance. Danced, Ethnographic, Used, Mask with tons of Patina! We are getting close to a point whereby DNA testing the patina and carbon dating the wood will be fiscally feasible and will make these peices timestamps-of-humanity.Beautiful, thick, polychrome paint with lots of personality.I love the large, oversized, moustache and eyebrows on these masks!Hints of the gesso below... natural stucco made of crushed shells and animal glues that are used to create a smooth base on top of the wood. This all clearly confirms that this peice is ethongraphic.. and danced. This would have been taken out for decades, reused, repainted, repaired and then eventually retired and sold.Eyecutouts for the dancer to see where they are going...Expertly carved with thin-walled carvingErgonomically carved out for comfortable wearing.8.0" T x 6.0" WTribal ArtCultural ArtifactsUnique Home AccentsGlobal DecorHandcrafted DecorExotic Wall HangingsArtisanal Wall ArtBohemian DecorEclectic Home AccessoriesEthnic Wall DecorIndigenous ArtWorldly Decor FindsVintage Wall DecorRustic Wall ArtArtistic Home AccentsCultural Wall SculpturesNatural Home DecorSustainable ArtTraditional Home AccentsEclectic Wall ArtExotic Home DecorArtistic Wall HangingsRustic Home AccentsHand-carved Wall ArtGlobal Wall ArtTribal Home DecorArtisan Wall DecorVintage Home AccentsBoho Wall ArtIndigenous Home DecorWorldly Wall ArtCultural Home AccentsHandmade Wall DecorUnique Wall SculpturesEthereal Home DecorNatural Wall ArtSustainable Home AccentsTraditional Wall DecorEclectic Home DecorExotic Wall ArtArtistic Home DecorCultural Wall ArtTribal Wall DecorArtisan Home AccentsVintage Wall ArtBohemian Wall DecorIndigenous Wall ArtGlobal Home AccentsRustic Wall DecorHand-carved Home AccentsTribal Wall ArtArtisanal Home DecorVintage Wall HangingsBoho Home AccentsEclectic Wall HangingsExotic Wall HangingsArtistic Wall SculpturesCultural Wall HangingsNatural Wall HangingsSustainable Wall ArtTraditional Wall HangingsIndigenous Wall HangingsGlobal Wall HangingsRustic Wall HangingsHand-carved Wall HangingsTribal Wall HangingsArtisanal Wall HangingsVintage Wall SculpturesBoho Wall HangingsEclectic Wall SculpturesExotic Wall SculpturesArtistic Wall HangingsCultural Wall SculpturesNatural Wall SculpturesSustainable Wall HangingsTraditional Wall SculpturesIndigenous Wall SculpturesGlobal Wall SculpturesRustic Wall SculpturesHand-carved Wall SculpturesTribal Wall SculpturesArtisanal Wall SculpturesVintage Wall HangingsBoho Wall SculpturesEclectic Wall HangingsExotic Wall HangingsArtistic Wall SculpturesCultural Wall HangingsNatural Wall HangingsSustainable Wall ArtTraditional Wall HangingsIndigenous Wall HangingsGlobal Wall HangingsRustic Wall HangingsHand-carved Wall HangingsTribal Wall HangingsArtisanal Wall HangingsVintage Wall SculpturesBoho Wall HangingsEclectic Wall Sculptures
