Description: Antique French Engraving from the Œuvres de Cuvier et Lacépède, Fish, Drawn by Acarie-Baron, Engraved by Schmelz, published by Garnier Frères, 1883 This antique French colored engraving was published by Garnier Frères in 1883 in the volume III, “Les Poissons”, of the “Œuvres de Cuvier et Lacépède contenant le complément de Buffon à l’histoire des mammifères et des oiseaux, l’histoire des cétacés, batraciens, serpents et poissons”. The engraving depicts examples of three species of fish, La Trigle Cavillone, Le Péristédion Malarmat and L’Uranoscope Rat (Atlantic stargazer) and was created for the book titled, “Le Régne animal”, by Cuvier, which was published by Victor Masson between 1836 and 1849. The original drawing was done by Jacques Isidore Acarie-Baron and Paul-Louis Oudart, French painters specializing in natural history and was engraved by Visto and Teillard, French engravers, as signed on the image. It was printed by Rémy Taneur, intaglio printer in Paris. This piece is in good condition with the exception of normal signs of age along the edges and a small loss on the upper left corner. It will be an excellent addition to your collection of prints or, matted and framed, a handsome wall decoration.
