Gilt withGold accents throughout and along the rectangularshaped base.There is a transfer-printed caption onthe sign "Oysters!" and another on the front bottombase, "Oysters, Sir?" There are no chips, no cracks,no repairs. The bottom has the incise number 2691and beneath that appears to be another incisednumber or letters. There is also a hand paintednumber (as seen in PICs). Victorian fairings were prized trinkets. mementosfrom country fairs (hence known as a fairing). There is a famous Black & White stereographentitled OYSTERS, SIR? in the National Museumof American History in which a woman standsbehind a table wearing a striped dress, hat tiedwith ribbon beneath her chin, right hand raisedand holding a knife; wooden bucket on the tablein front of her filled with oysters.The image dates back to the 1850s-1860s.
