Description: Up for sale is a very nice HALF size Dutch/Belgian cylinder-form wine/liquor aka generic utility bottle dating right around 1770. It's free blown with no mold seams. It's a pale olive green glass color. It has a crude and very thick applied string rim/banded collar just below the plain straight lip and a kicked-up base with a jagged blowpipe pontil scar. It's 8 3/4" tall and it's a bit less than 2 7/8" diameter at the base, widening out to more like 3 1/4" at the shoulder. It's got relatively straight sides but with a distinct flaring-out further up on the body, gradual shoulder, and long neck; it is a good example of "flower pot" form, likely Belgian-made for the Dutch market or possibly North German. You can see the varieties of the shape pictured and described on pg. 127-129 in Willy van den Bossche's vital book "Antique Glass Bottles: Their History and Evolution (1500-1850)". It's in truly excellent condition with no chips or cracks whatsoever, not even a nick, but with moderate patina including heavy all-over wear and some scratching, plus a dull haze inside and out. It was most likely an ocean recovery with that soft mineralization and having been worn smooth, in a pleasant way like sea glass, easily noticed around the mouth. I've pictured it next to some other early European blackglass to illustrate the variety of forms I have for sale - this listing is for just the single bottle, not the group. Satisfaction guaranteed, if you're not in love after handling it in person I'm happy to accept returns. Shipped via USPS Priority Mail at buyer's expense, or pickup in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Please visit my 'Ebay Store' as I always have dozens of other bottles, flasks etc for sale - if you see something else you like, let me know and we can work out a deal and combine shipping! Be sure to "follow" or "save" me as a seller, that way you're the first to know when I add new listings :) I am a proud member of the FOHBC (Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors), I encourage anyone unfamiliar to reach out and I'll be happy to share a long list of benefits/reasons why I'm a member and why I think you should join too!
