Description: Hobbs Brockunier & Co Art Glass Salt Shaker Acorn Decorated (This information is the same for this set of shakers as the plain Acorn I also listed for sale) These shakers requires more research, as it really is a mystery....Here is what I found. Before I go into detail of my findings lets get the facts out of the way. These shakers are a heat sensitive glass, mold blown and 2-3/4" tall x 6-7/8" circumference and pattern named by author Peterson who felt it was reminiscent of an Acorn. Produced c. 1889-1891. Book 2, page 96. Hobbs Brockunier & Company formed 1863. In 1888 became Hobbs Glass Company. Harry Northwood worked there. In 1891 Hobbs joined the big giant U.S. Glass conglomerate & opened as Factory H. Closed in 1893 & re-opened 1902 by Northwood & became H. Northwood & Company. Book 3, page 158 Under U.S. Glass Company shows a line up with their opinion. All 3 are similar but differ slightly. Acorn Little 2-3/8 tall, (Hobbs) Acorn 2-3/4" tall, and Acorn Little Variant by Factory C is 2-3/4" tall. Factory C was Challinor, Taylor & Co. This 3rd shaker is slightly narrower at the neck.Also...Book 2 page 188 Acorn Shaker produced at Hobbs has a base circumference of 6-7/8" and a much larger opening. An 1891 trade ad shows that the Challinor shaker produced at Factory C was 2-3/4" tall x 6-3/4" circumference. So that would make my shakers Hobbs. Not to throw a wrench in the mix but....My Hobbs book (Hobbs Brockunier & Company Glass by Authors Neila & Tom Bredehoft) states on page 165 that these shakers have been "mis-attributed" to Hobbs. Since Harry Northwood took over Hobbs / Factory H in 1902, I decided to check both of my Harry Northwood Books I have to see if possibly he acquired those molds and put them into production. Found nothing to support this.... Dang! With all that said... I love the color of these shakers and think they are special regardless of who made them! Being heat sensitive no two will be exact in their shaded coloring. see above infoBook , Page Reference Book Identification: The 2 Bibles of Salt Shakers Collecting are "The World of Salt Shakers" Antique & Art Glass by Mildred & Ralph Lechner, Volume 2 and 3. If you have these books you can follow along with ones I have identified. A 3rd book, Glass Salt Shakers: 1,000 Patterns by Arthur G Peterson is also informative but no color pictures FYI about Art Glass Salt Shakers.... While I will describe any damage like chips, cracks or hairlines, I will not list out every factory imperfection such as striation glass or stress lines air bubbles, impurities, etc. as these were utilitarian items and quality control wasn't a priority with the tops. The jagged tops you always/often find are a result of these being "mold blown" and the shaker is busted off the pontil rod leaving a jagged edge. A lid was placed on top so I guess the factories didn't see a reason to grind down & polish the top rims. Although sometimes they did, especially later in time. There are some exceptions to this rule of thumb with higher end glass companies. Most of these shakers are circa 1870s to early 1900s. Later on salt shakers became pressed molded and the rims are smooth. Lids are NOT that important when collecting these shakers unless they are original. So don't be surprised to find different lids on the same shaker or bad condition lids. The collection is all about the shakers! I do COMBINED SHIPPING! If combining shipping please "send request for combined shipping invoice" with revised shipping cost BEFORE you pay! I can not adjust shipping once you pay!!!! It appears Ebay does NOT automatically credit back their commission on the shipping fees that they charge me and Paypal doesn't refund any fees at all anymore! U.S. Shipping only...No International Shipping. Hawaii & Alaska quoted shipping fee with insurance so please request an invoice to pay from. If shipping cost do not cover Hawaii & Alaska I will need to send you another invoice for additional shipping charges.
