Description: This Antique Japanese 8" Scrimshaw Tanto Paper Knife Letter Opener & Bone Scabbard is in good condition overall but does show expected signs of age, handling and storage. The steel blade has a flat, blunt edge that appears to have never been sharpened, no markings can be found. At some point in the past the blade was glued into the bone handle but now it is loose and easily removed. The blade could be permanently reattached but it has been left exactly as found and still displays very nicely as it is. The blade measures approximately 4.25" in length, total overall length is about 8". The bone crossguard shows mild orange staining that appears to be most likely caused by the steel blade. The bone handle is decorated on each side with "scrimshaw" style illustrations seemingly depicting a rolled scroll and a flute. The bone scabbard is very neatly put together and the workmanship is very high. No damage from abuse or neglect can be found however there is a mild area of staining near the throat. Both sides are adorned with detailed "scrimshaw" style illustrations showing children at play. Each of the children wears a distinctive hairstyle that appears to be Japanese in origin. The blade rests in the scabbard loosely and the two pieces make an attractive pair together. This knife would make a fine addition to any Antique Asian blade collection and would be very difficult to upgrade.
