Antique Japanese Satsuma Koro Figural Liu Hai Toad Lid Shishi Komainu Handles

Description: Rare antique Japanese Satsuma Koro tripod censer with figural lid of folk lore immortal LIU HAI kneeling above a TOAD. Two hand painted immortal scenes framed in moriage center each side of the ribbed melon formed creamy white crackle glazed vessel, rows of floral medallion motif encompass the remainder of the body with the entirety accentuated in gold leaf. Komainu, Shishi, Foo Dog, handles flank each side of the vessel body seated upon three applied Foo Lion face and footed tripod legs. Maker or kiln marks are seen along the inner lip of the vessel and under side of the lid. Circa likely 19th Century Meiji period, possibly late Edo. CONDITION is estate fresh as shown displaying appropriate signs of age such as small areas of enamel loss and hairlines at the application sites of the feet and handles having very minimal impact on the presentation of this extremely rare and magnificent piece. Liu Haichan was a 10th Century Chinese daoist xian transcendent immortal master of internal alchemy who came to be considered the Caishen or God of Wealth. Liu Haichan has been depicted in Chinese and Japanese art throughout many centuries often with a mythical Chanchu (toad) known in the present-day as Jin Chan meaning money toad.
