Description: 'Middlesex'. Pictorial map by George Bickham printed 1796 Copper engraved map on hand laid paper. George Bickham the elder (1684-1758) was an English writing master and engraver. He is best known for his engraving work in the 'Universal Penman', a collection of writing exemplars which helped to popularise the English round hand script in the 18th Century. In 1754 he published 'The British Monarchy' which included many scenes from the English countryside and included a series of illustrated maps, birds eye views which showed the main landmarks of the counties. These map were republished in 'A curious collection of Birds Eye Views' published by Laurie and Whittle in 1796. This map comes from that collection.
