Description: Title: A Map of the Tower Liberty Description: This engraving depicts the the Liberty of the Tower, an administrative area separate from the City of London. The engraving shows the four districts of the Liberty. 1. The Tower of London with its triple defensive system of a moat and two concentric walls. 2. Marine Square, now named Wellclose Square, bounded by Royal Mint St. (formerly Cable St.) to the north, The Highway (formerly East Smithfield) to the south, Ensign St. (formerly Well St.) to the west and Swedenborg Gardens to the east. 3. Little Minories, bounded by Minories to the west, Haydon St. to the south, Little Somerset St. to the north and Mansell St. to the east. 4. Spittle Fields bounded by Sandy's Row (formerly Petticoat Lane) to the west, Gun St. to the east, Artillery Passage (formerly Smock Alley) to the south. The northern boundary has been obliterated by extensive redevelopment around Spitalfield Market. John Stow's "Survey" appeared first in 1598 and remained the major reference source on the city's history for decades. However, it was not until around 1700 that steps were taken to produce an up-dated edition with maps illustrating the areas described. Richard Blome (1641-1705) was charged with preparing a series of ward plans, copied from the detail of the recently published large-scale map of London by John Ogilby and William Morgan, frequently at a larger scale, thus with more clarity, and with major buildings shown pictorially in profile as "uprights". The plans were finally published in John Strype's "Survey Of The Cities Of London And Westminster ... ", being the first ward maps to be published. Blank verso.
